Government landfills will reach capacity within only 6 - 10 years. Hong Kong puts 6.4m tonnes of waste in landfills each year.

Since 1998 three-colour waste separation recovery was worth HKD500m. This saved HKD65m in landfill costs.

The Hong Kong Government's recycling efforts have been stepped up by 6%. Plans are underway to recover 20% of domestic waste within two years. 167 estates have joined a programme aimed at the separation of recyclables at source.

LEGCO Chairwomen Ms. Choy So-Uk says: "the scheme deserved more input from the Government".

Rebecca Tam of Hong Yip says: "it's a three-win situation". Management, residents and cleaners/recyclers gain. Up to 33% of domestic waste can be reduced!

Recyclables collected from Heng Fa Cheun Estate (with bins on each floor) have raised HKD100,000 within the last year!
